The Matochos Childcare Center is located high in the eastern mountains of Guatemala. It is a very small farming community. The families here are among the poorest of the poor due to harsh economic conditions. Often children begin working at an early age as a means of survival, with little opportunity for a good education. After a massive earthquake devastated Guatemala in 1974, AMG began helping the children as they could; it wasn’t until 1979 when AMG decided to start a childcare center in this area. Monday through Friday, children come while they are not at school to receive a hot lunch, participate in group activities, receive help with their school work, and hear God’s word. The staff at Matochos encourages the parents by doing home visits, Bible studies, workshops, and activities for the whole family. This shows God’s love and helps to improve family life.

Guatemala is the most populated country in Central America. The majority religion is Christianity and is primarily Roman Catholic. Families in Guatemala suffer from many difficult circumstances such as drug use, alcoholism, physical violence, broken homes, and malnourishment. Often children are forced to begin working at an early age. Many families are extremely poor, live in small dilapidated homes and don’t make enough to provide for their physical needs.
