Soraya is a sweet girl who comes from a Buddhist family living in Thailand. Both of parents have only a sixth grade education, and they live in a village in the northern part of the country. They are poor farmers who tend to land owned by the government. They grow rice for the family’s needs and corn to sell to others. Their meager income is not enough to meet the family’s needs. Development in the area lags significantly behind the rest of the country. And, conditions are primitive with many families getting their water from hand-dug open wells. On top of that, drug trafficking and addiction, brought on in part by a lack of hope, is prevalent in the area. Soraya participates in AMG’s New Hope Child and Youth Development Center located in the remote Maecharim district of northern Thailand that is surrounded by hills, forests and fields. At New Hope, children receive nutritious meals, tutoring, and weekly Bible lessons that share the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. The center places a strong emphasis on Christian values and principles that will prepare children in need for a brighter tomorrow. Soraya is the youngest in her family and is rather quiet. When she grows up she wants to become a medical doctor. Through your faithful support she will be able to pursue her dreams. Thank you for inspiring hope in Soraya’s life.

Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist country, and many people also believe in the spiritual realm. Children from poor families go to state-run schools where teaching is sub-standard. Their parents normally have little education and cannot be relied upon to help them. School children seldom reach the ninth grade and most end up working in family farms. Since the people have very low or no education, they lack basic knowledge of life skills like personal hygiene, household management, family planning and balancing budgets.
