Carmela is a four year old girl in kindergarten. Her family lived in a province of the Philippines but have now moved to the city where they live with the father’s sister. Her father has not been able to find work because of his limited education so borrowed money from his sister to begin a street vendor’s business. He tries to help pay a portion of the electric and water bills. Her mother tries to supplement their income with accepting work doing laundry for others. Because funds are limited, there is often not enough for food so the older of four boys give their portions to the younger children. They must often walk to and from school. Sponsorship of Carmela will assure her of a brighter future.

Papuri Child Development Center
The Papuri Child Development Center partners with a local church to make Christ known in children’s lives. Every week children are immersed in the Word of God through church services, Bible studies, discipleship meetings, youth group, and devotions. Additionally, children are served nutritious meals and given medical assistance at the center. Center staff are available to mentor, tutor, educate and encourage the children to follow after Christ.
The Philippines is a country that consists of over 7,000 islands in Southeast Asia. It has many active volcanoes and its location and torrential rainfall means that several areas are prone to flooding, typhoons and cyclones. The majority of the population is Roman Catholic, but some people are superstitious and still practice animism. Poverty, alcoholism and widespread drug use plagues their communities. This has led to broken families and abandoned children. There are few consistent job opportunities as well, making it difficult for parents to provide for their families.
